20 Beautiful Mother of the Bride Outfits

For some brides, helping their mother find an outfit she’s happy with for the Big Day can almost be as stressful as picking the perfect wedding gown, and when it comes to things like personal style versus ‘expectations’ (ie the ‘traditional’ mother of the bride outfit) it’s very easy to see why (note here that when we say ‘mother of the bride’ we mean both mother of the bride and mother of the groom!) Luckily today the expectation for what the mother of the bride should look like on the day is becoming more loosely defined (as in bridal fashion) and moms can wear whatever they feel happiest and most comfortable in. That being said, there’s no better time to treat yourself to something gorgeous and glamorous, so our pick of the best of MOTB fashion (hopefully) includes something beautiful to suit every age, style and budget.

Today we’ve featured some of the top designers in occasion wear from around the world including the ever-popular Posen, UK bridal glamour merchant Ian Stuart, Spanish seamstress Carla Ruiz and our very own Caroline Kilkenny. There are so many great boutiques in Ireland offering superb services for those seeking out a fabulous gown for the Big Day – McElhinneys Department store in Ballyboffey, Vanity Fair Boutique in Newbridge and Lynch Fashions in Banagher, to name a few – but of course take a trip to some of the great stores on the high street too and don’t be afraid to try something different! For a list of the best mother of the bride and occasion wear boutiques in Ireland check out the weddingsonline fashion directory!

PS We know some of these photos feature women who aren’t likely to have a son or daughter of legal marrying age, unfortunately that’s who the designers of the dresses chose to model for them! Apologies in advance if this irks you.

Wedding Accessories: The Prettiest Pearls

Take a peek at any wedding forum and you’ll come across tons of posts on the subject of pearls and your wedding day. There are many a myth and superstition flying around about pearls and why you should and shouldn’t don them for your Big Day (fake versus real, good luck versus bad luck – according to old tales wearing pearls was considered unlucky and would represent the tears a bride will shed in her marriage). But before you go ripping those elegant baubles of that designer veil you spent half a small bank on, remember it is just an old tradition that won’t affect you and your happy marriage either way – the bridal world would be bankrupt if it was the case so embellish away!

A beautiful addition to any ensemble, these shimmering iridescent little baubles are a truly elegant and timeless accessory choice for brides. If you’re one for simple, chic pieces, there are some beautiful simple string pearl necklaces and bracelets over on Jules Bridal Jewellery. Or if you think pearls are a little on the safe side and are more of a chunky jewellery kind of gal, take a peek at the fabulous statement piece from The Parisian Bride below and be converted – and there are lots of other divine pearl pieces being given a modern twist (J Crew have some very cool designs over on Net-A-Porter and we’ve our eye on this pretty bridal belt from Jules Bridal – above). There are just so many gorgeous ways to work pearls in your wedding look (hair pieces, jewellery, clutches, shoes, the dress itself) and if you do decide to invest in a piece for your wedding, you can be guaranteed you’ll get plenty of wear of it beyond the Big Day! Here’s s just a fraction of some of the fabulous pearl pieces available online and in stores now…

Mother’s Day is on Sunday but if you’re getting married sometime soon, it’s not the only chance you’ll have to tell your mammy or daddy just how much they mean to you. Your wedding is the perfect opportunity to thank them for all they’ve done for you over the years and of course on the lead up to the wedding whether it’s helping out with deposits or accompanying you to fittings, to whipping up button holes or baking treats for your dessert table.

There are lots of lovely heartfelt ways to say thank you – one of our favourites is the personalised handkerchief, a hankie with a personal message to your mom that she can use to dab at her happy tears. There are two great companies that offer this service, both based in Ireland – Kitchen Stitchin’ and WowWee. Or if you want your mam to feel part of the bridal party, you can pick up a pretty personalised hanger for her gorgeous new frock over on NotontheHighstreet and a fluffy Mother of the Bride robe right here on the weddingsonline Shop so she can get ready in comfort. A personalised photo album or framed picture of the two of you will be something she is sure to cherish or if you want to give her something she can wear again and again and remember this special day by, a beautiful piece of jewellery with an engraving is a gorgeous way to say thanks. If you’re after a practical gift, think vouchers, tickets to a show, a night away, dinner, or spa treats for some pampering. NotonthHighstreet also have a range of thoughtful gift ideas especially for the Mother of the Bride or Groom, from MOB totes you can fill with her favourite goodies to sweet framed art works and a Mother of the Bride mug so she can sip in style on the Big morning. For more gorgeous mother of the bride and groom gift ideas check out our round-up below…

10 Wedding Style Tips from Stylist Lisa Fitzpatrick

Today we’re joined by stylist Lisa Fitzpatrick who is sharing some useful style tips now that wedding season is upon us! Whether you’re a bride about to embark on the hunt for your dream wedding dress or you’ve a handful of weddings to attend but haven’t a breeze what to wear, Lisa’s 10 top style tips will help make your shopping experience that little bit easier…

For Brides

1. You will always find the dress of your dreams so don’t panic if your search doesn’t yield results straight away. If you can’t find ‘the one’ in the bridal shops, then hire a seamstress to make it for you.

2. Know your budget and stick to it! You will only be wearing this dress for one day so don’t obsess over labels. No one will know if it’s not designer. When you meet with the sales assistant, let them know your price range. If they keep showing you items that are out of your range, go elsewhere.

3. When you find your dream dress, take down the relevant information such as the name of the designer and the serial number. Search for the dress online and see if there are stockists who are selling it at a cheaper price. If you don’t shop around it will cost you dearly.

4. Think about the jewellery that will best suit your shade of gown. Diamanté is beautiful with a white dress, while pearls are stunning with an ivory dress. Simplicity is the key to wedding beauty. If you are wearing a tiara, then avoid wearing a blingy necklace and earrings. Have one key piece but make sure your other pieces are toned down considerably.

5. Don’t feel limited to wearing white on your wedding day. Try on champagne, ivory and gold wedding dresses as they may be more flattering against your skin tone.

For Wedding Guests

6. Accessorise: Weddings can be expensive, especially if they all come at once and you need to have a different outfit for each one. I think a great way to avoid breaking the bank is to choose a couple of versatile dresses and update them for each wedding by wearing a different bag, hat, shoes and jewellery.

7. Get the Colour right: Definitely don’t wear white!! This rule may seem outdated, but it’s actually just good etiquette to not compete with the bride on her special day. Sometimes black isn’t considered a popular colour for weddings but never underestimate a Little Black Dress for the special occasion. Also consider the weather, time of day, and time of year. In general, weddings that take place at night and in the winter are more formal than those that take place during the day in summer or spring.

8. Mother of the Bride/Groom: Choosing what to wear as the mother-of-the-bride is a difficult task, it’s best to start with a dress that’s in keeping with the colour scheme of the wedding, doesn’t clash with the groom’s mother’s outfit and most importantly is comfortable. After all it’s a long day and you need to ensure you feel comfortable and relaxed.

9. Black-Tie: For ladies attending a black tie wedding, opt for a formal dress, usually floor length but not necessarily. It’s time to bring out those beaded purses, fancy wraps and formal jewellery you’ve been waiting to find an occasion to wear them to. And for himself, a tuxedo is the only appropriate thing to wear. If it says creative black tie, he should still wear a tuxedo, perhaps with a black shirt or collarless white shirt.

10. Comfort Zone: A wedding is all about celebrating people you care about, and if you’re wearing something that restricts your movement or your shoes are too high you might not be able to celebrate as much as you’d like. Feeling comfortable is very important especially if you want to stay on the dance floor all night and maybe even well into the morning! And of course know your audience! Weddings are family events so make sure that your outfit is appropriate, nothing too sexy or revealing.

Psst… Lisa will be visiting counties around the country with her roadshow Lisa Fitzpatrick’s Fashion Fix throughout the months of April and May. The fun filled day will include Style Workshops, Hair and Make-up Masterclasses, Fashion Shows, Surprise Celebrity Guests and Much Much More. For more information or to buy tickets click here!

5 Seriously Stylish Mother of the Bride Outfits

If you’ve been lurking around wedding blogs long enough, you’ll have noticed that everything changes in wedding fashion, everything that is, except the tried and tested Mother of the Bride outfit. The traditional take on stylish MOBs is a rather formulaic one – take one below-the-knee silk satin dress, add a matching bolero and finish with a sparkly bag and shoe combo, fascinator optional. Of course this is a well known formula for MOB style because it works so well – comfortable, elegant, timeless… Thing is, what if your mom’s not the traditional MOB type? Can she don a pantsuit? Push the bar out with some prints? Go casual with some chic separates? Of course she can! Today however we’re not going to go full-on fashionista with our stylish MOB outfits (we’ll leave that for another day), but rather have simply added a twist to the traditional to show MOBs how things can be shaken up and still look elegant and timeless.

Hats and proud mamas tend to go hand in hand when it comes to weddings. While they’re not for everyone (some people aren’t hat types and don’t feel true to themselves donning one just for the occasion and that’s totally fine), if you are very much in to your hats or want something to complete your wedding look, you’re in luck as there are some amazing Irish designers that specialise in hats and occasion wear headpieces. Palles Millinery, Sophie Hunter Millinery and Emily Jean Milliner & Jewellery Designer are three such Irish designers that have stunning collections and can even create an incredible piece if you’re after something special. The high street is also home to some beautiful designs if you’re looking to get ideas. We’ve rounded up a mix of 25 Mother of the Bride hats, headpieces and hair bands to give you just a flavour of what’s out there at the moment and of course, if you’re after something truly unique or bespoke, have a chat with one of these talented milliners who will be able to create something special just for you…

6 Sensational Mother of the Bride Dresses for A/W

Mother of the bride dresses come in all shapes and shades for autumn winter this year, as ladies are slowly learning they can indeed wear something unique and stylish and THEM for their daughter/son’s Big Day. Of course the main colours and trends for the season – wool capes, over the knee boots, bell-bottom pantsuits and deep shades like maroons and browns – don’t exactly scream cheerful mother-in-law so really being ‘on trend’ means wearing something elegant, somewhat glamorous and most importantly, something you love.

If you’re a mom who’s anything but traditional you can of course push the bar out with some unusual prints, a little fringing, or something truly unique from one of the incredibly talented Irish designers we have on our doorstep. Separates are becoming more and more popular (no, we don’t mean crop tops and skirts, let’s leave that to the 19 year olds, perhaps) while more and more moms are opting to shop on the high street for something chic and modern. Here’s our pick of the outfits we think will look elegant and timeless no matter what your style.

PS! Ultra modish moms might want to check out our 5 Seriously Stylish Mother of the Bride Dresses for a true contemporary take on MOTB style!

29 Sublime Mother of the Bride Dresses for Spring/Summer

With it being Mother’s Day this weekend, we thought today we’d shine a light on the women that put the love and sparkle into our lives long before the other half came along! For many moms, helping their daughter or son to plan the day of their dreams is an incredibly special time but one that’s somewhat overshadowed by stressing about what she’s going to wear on the day too! And of course, the Mother of the Bride or Groom is allowed to have her little freak out – it’s a day when family, friends and neighbours will see her at her best and no doubt she’ll have plenty of photos scattered around the house staring back at her for years to come!

It’s fair to say that typical ‘Mother of the Bride’ outfits were never the most flattering rigouts in the past but luckily these days there are so many gorgeous options to choose from. The trick for us is to keep things as neutral as possible, and while it’s tempting to go for a bright colour for spring/summer, approach it with caution, and think about blending in between the bride and bridesmaids instead. Glamorous gold and silver will always work, as will a lace number in neutrals like grey or cream. Opt for long sheer sleeves if you don’t want to show your arms, or add a stylish cropped jacket or luxurious cape.

Mother of the Bride Dress Stockists Ireland

There are so many great boutiques in Ireland offering superb services for those seeking out a fabulous gown for the Big Day – McElhinneys Department Store in Ballyboffey, Vanity Fair Boutique in Newbridge and Lynch Fashions Banagher, to name a few – but of course take a trip to some of the great stores on the high street too and don’t be afraid to try something different! For a list of the best mother of the bride and occasion wear boutiques in Ireland check out the weddingsonline fashion directory!

10 Beautiful Autumn/Winter Mother of the Bride Dresses

We’ve seen some absolutely gorgeous mother of the bride dresses in our real weddings in recent months – it’s safe to say when it comes to stylish wedding wear, Irish mammies are currently sporting some of the best! At the moment we’re loving neutral, cream or off-white lace dresses, but for autumn/winter weddings you may want to add a little bit of colour in there. One way is to go for a two-tone lace look, which looks incredible in browns and creams, or to colour block with a strong blue or grey. Winter weddings also allow for more formal attire, so don’t shy away from maxi styles with a bit of shimmering sequins in silver or gold.

14 Stunning Mother of the Bride Dresses for Spring/Summer 2017

Mother of the Bride outfits have come a long way from the billowing all-covered-up two-piece floral print and hat combos we know from the 80s, and this year for Spring/Summer styles are getting even more chic and contemporary. We absolutely love the look of the mother of the bride or groom in a neutral colour – think off-white, creams and golds for elegant, understated glamour – but for spring summer this year we’re seeing some stunning pastels coming in to the mix and adding some beautiful depth and colour to the bridal party.

P.S. We know some of these photos feature women who aren’t likely to have a son or daughter of legal marrying age, unfortunately that’s who the designers of the dresses chose to model for them! Apologies in advance if this irks you.

Thoughtful Ways to Involve Your Family in Your Wedding

Being engaged and getting to plan a wedding has got to be one of the most beautiful ways to bond as a couple. And better yet, what a wonderful way to get to know your Other Half’s family. If you haven’t spent a ton of time together, involving them in the wedding planning process is a pretty fun way to break the ice. Wondering just how to involve your family in your wedding? Here are some very practical, simple and fun ways to do just that!

Get them to help with DIY decor projects

Perhaps you’ve chosen to get creative and make some of your own wedding decor, assemble your own bouquets or design the invitations yourself. Invite your family to take part in the creativity! You’ll have fun together and the work will get done faster with more hands on deck.

Photo by Kevin Morris Photography | A Sweet Summer Wedding at Mount Juliet

Take them dress shopping

If you’re the type of bride who wants opinions on your wedding dress, consider taking your mom and your Other Half’s mom along with you when you try on dresses. Not keen on having additional opinions on your wedding dress? Consider joining the moms when they shop for their dresses!

Photo by Lauren Victoria Gibson | A Traditional Sun-Filled Wedding by Lyndyloo in Spain

Show them your venue

What’s the best way to get your families excited about your wedding? Take them to the place where it’s all going to happen! Show them why you chose your dream venue and they will fall in love with it, just like you did.

Haven’t found a venue yet? Take a look at our Venue Finder.

Ask them to spend the morning of the wedding day with you

A lovely way to involve your family in your wedding is to invite them to be with you on the morning of the wedding day.

Photo by Give Us A Goo Photography | A Gorgeous Vintage Inspired Wedding

Involve them in the ceremony

There are a few ways you could do this. Anything from making sure they have priority seating right in the front row to inviting your mom or dad to walk you down the aisle to inviting them to do a reading, and anything in between!

Photo by Paul Duane Photography | A Hollywood Glam Wedding at Knightsbrook Hotel

Include them in some fun photos

We’ve all seen the standard family photos taken at weddings, but why not throw in some fun photos that’ll have everyone smiling and laughing? Anything involving a unique backdrop or some interactive props is sure to have everyone feeling (and looking) relaxed. I love this balloon send-off idea, which resulted in a gorgeous and spontaneous photo with family and close friends.

Photo by Amir Kaljikovic | Two-Day Wedding Festivities at Schloss Prielau, Austria

Ask for their input regarding the wedding playlist

Ever heard of a playlist party? Well, it goes a little bit like this: You, your Other Half, and both of your families spend an afternoon or evening together, choosing the right music for the wedding day. You can include your favourite wine and snacks, an epic online playlist of everyone’s top picks, and I’d advise you to make sure there’s enough space for a little bit of dancing. You know, to test out the songs and see if they’ll really get everyone up on the dancefloor!

Does My Dad Have to Walk Me Down the Aisle?

$

Many brides are concerned about wedding etiquette and trying not to offend anybody. There are plenty of reasons to be unconventional in the way you do things. One of the most asked wedding etiquette questions is: Does my dad have to walk me down the aisle? In short: No, he does not.

There are lots of unique scenarios in which asking your dad to walk you down the aisle is not appropriate. If you find yourself in this boat, be assured that you do not have to include your dad in this intimate moment if you don’t want to. Here are a few alternatives to the traditional ‘father walking his daughter down the aisle’ thing:

Ask your mom

Just like the bride, pictured in the main image of this post. This is a lovely opportunity to honour your mom for the role she has played in your life.

Ask another family member or friend

Your grandfather, an uncle who was like a father to you, or your brother. These are just a few suggestions of men who have been like a father to you. Another wonderful opportunity to show a special man in your life how much he means to you.

Walk with your Other Half

Who says you have to meet your Other Half at the end of the aisle? You could totally arrive together and walk down the aisle hand in hand.

Go solo

You are a strong, independent woman. If you feel brave enough, walk down the aisle on your own! Sure, having someone to lean on (literally) is great, but you don’t need to if you don’t want to.
